Lisa A and Jordana have recently completed a Circle of Security Parenting group, held at our Manning clinic on Monday nights. Circle of Security is based on decades of research supporting and strengthening parent-child relationships. This 8-week group helps caregivers understand their child’s emotional world by learning to read their emotional needs, support their child’s ability to successfully manage their emotions and enhance their child’s self-esteem.
Feedback from parents has been overwhelmingly positive with 100% of the parents commenting they ‘strongly agreed’ that meeting and reflecting with a group of parents was helpful to them, and 100% of the parents ‘strongly agreed’ that they would recommend this course to others. We are currently working on building future pathways for parents who have completed the Circle of Security either within the group, or in individual sessions. We aim to provide sustained connections for parents to continue to keep the Circle of Security in mind and build upon the gains they have made with their children.
Some reflections from the group….
“I’ve enjoyed connecting with parents who are having similar experiences with their children.”
“I’ve learnt that their behaviours are always telling me something and that I need to listen to their needs, and fill up their emotional cup.”
“It’s a worthwhile course, as it opens your eyes to your child’s behaviour and why they do what they do.”
“It helps you to look past the behaviour and see the underlying reasons ‘why’ and gives you a framework to address it.”
“As parents we need to be able to analyse our children’s needs and if we can interpret which part of the circle they are at, we can provide the best support.
“That ‘being with’ my children in all of their emotional states is what is going to them feel that they are understood.”
We are now taking expressions of interest for the next Circle of Security group to be run in Term 3. We also continue to offer individual/couple sessions – please speak with your Occupational Therapist if interested!
